Urlich to Serve Up the Sounds at Taste of Auckland
Nothing says Summer like an al fresco lunch, a glass of Pinot and a bit of Urlich on the side!
So, with that in mind, music maestro Peter Urlich has again been appointed as music director of the Peroni Bandstand at New Zealand’s most vibrant food festival, Taste of Auckland; 15th – 18th November, Victoria Park, Auckland.
The Urlich line-up for 2012 is the perfect soundtrack for summer, featuring New Zealand’s most esteemed and long-lasting jazz outfit the Nairobi Trio, eclectic jazz group Voxnova, the Australian vocal talent of Cousin Alice, funk virtuosos the Hipstamatics and up-and-comers Five Mile Town, plus a cameo by Peter Urlich himself.
“Taste of Auckland is such an iconic event,” said Urlich. “And all that sun, fine food and wine needs to be matched by the perfect beats and sounds, whether morning, noon or night,” he said.
Urlich has reached deep into his box of tricks to assemble the quintessential menu of bands and musicians to match the impressive array of restaurants, chefs and Artisan producers at the festival.
Top-billing will be New Zealand’s number one jazz ensemble The Nairobi Trio. With a career spanning more than 20 years, the unique sound of the Nairobi Trio is the perfect accompaniment to any of the fine dining dishes on offer.
Voxnova brings to Taste the sound of the Paris jazz scene, a dynamic five piece band reminiscent of the Gipsy Kings and Buena Vista Social Club, but with a uniquely local twist.
Likewise, the husky voice of Australian Cousin Alice is the perfect accompaniment to your evening cocktail. With an antique banjo-ukulele and a trail of musicians behind her, Cousin Alice has been musically compared to Tom Waits and Madeleine Peyroux.
Adding a definite taste of funk to the mix is the Hipstamatics, a nine-piece group that takes iconic songs from a wide array of genres and re-mixes and reinterprets them to create an original, funky, soulful blend of upbeat sounds guaranteed to get the audience on their feet.
Completing the lineup are up-and-comers Five Mile Town, with their fresh take on traditional Indie folk, with an added twist of blues.
As well as a strong blend of musicians, the Savanna Cider Village will be hosting well-known comedian Ben Hurley, whose award-winning comedy will mix perfectly with a delicious and refreshing glass of Premium Cider and a game of Petanque on their Savanna pitch.
Says Festival Director Rob Eliott, “Peter Urlich is one of the icons ofNew Zealandmusic and he has been with Taste of Auckland since the start. We’re delighted to be working with Peter again to present a live soundtrack that will compliment the festival.
“If this was a concert you’d want to go, but add the foods and wines, the chefs, and the masterclasses and you have one of New Zealand’s best festival experiences, right here in the heart of Auckland City,” said Eliott.
